[ODE] Object detection

I am creating martian rover and it will need to avoid obstacles autonomously
and to be able to reduce speed if necessary.
Does any one know how it would be possible to detect if there is object an
object in rover's range please?
Sorry if it's easy question but I have just started learning C++ and ODE.
