It may be reasonable to have some things forward-extrapolated, and others go
through a round trip.

Unreal tournament (2004, probably others) only forward-extrapolates the
player so that the controls feel responsive.  However, vehicles are not
cheated this way [their controls go through a server round trip], with an
excessive ping [say 800] the delay between pressing forward and actually
moving is quite visible.

I think the link gun alt-fire went through a server round trip too, because
as you turned when you had such a high ping it would continue to go to the
same spot, the would bend to reach it as you turned away.
