[ODE] First time user questions

I have decided to switch from my osg application's simple boundingbox
collision detection to ODE, and I have found two examples of using ODE and
OSG together (dice2 demo and LMB's ODE demo, which currently explodes when
running with ode-0.6/osg-1.0).
I was wondering if you could give me some hints to get started on taking
an imported file (3ds or osg) of uknown complexity (but with a reasonable
amount of faces) and use it in ODE. My application consists of a jointed
hand (palm +5 3-joint finger) and I want to make it possible to pick up
mostly cylindrical objects. Maybe someone has made a OSG node loader? Any
hints and tips are welcome.
Also, does ODE support scaling of objects?
