[ODE] gravity units?

The docs say that dWorldSetGravity takes m/s/s as parameters, such
that -9.81 would be Earth's gravity, but how does this translate to
ODE's unit system? Is 1 unit equal to 1 meter? If not, how does one
figure out a realistic Earth gravity setting? This is even more
complicated since it is affected both by the maximum framerate at
which the program permits the main loop to be called and by the
iterations and max step parameters used for dWorldQuickStep, so how
does one get a particular desired gravity with all these variables?

Thanks.
