[ODE] Varying body size

Hi, I'm a beginner with ODE, and very impressed with what I've seen so 
far.  I have what is probably an unusual modelling requirement.  A body 
is tethered by a cable to another body, and I'm currently handling the 
cable as a rigid rod (OK since it is always in tension).  Now I want to 
be able to vary the length of cable dynamically, e.g winch it in.  Is 
there a way to do this in ODE?
