Yes, you are quite correct, I forgot to mention in my last post that I tried the fixed joint ;). 

Right now all my objects are disabled by default. What happened was that as soon as anything touched one of the trees and enabled, it would just disappear. I'm not sure if it was a problem with the joint or just a mistake I made somewhere else, but I decided it wasn't really worth fixing since a fixed joint doesn't quite do what I want, and all the other joints acted as I expected them to.

Ideally, what I want is to have the objects have bit flexibility before they break; which, as far as I know, a fixed joint can't really provide. It's mostly just a cosmetic issue as either way it will take a certain amount of force to break it, but I think it'd be nicer if you saw the trees start leaning a bit before they come crashing down under the tanks treads ;)
