Box + 4 rays means that you have a hovering box (that's the chassis) 
and each frame, you cast 4 days down (in the local orientation of 
the box); these find the wheel contact points. Figure out how far 
down the ray the ground is, and apply appropriate spring forces in 
that way. Also, the spring forces will tell you how much traction 
each wheel has; you actually apply forces to the wheel mount points 
of the box to drive the car forward.

Don't know of a reference, but I'm pretty sure that most car 
simulation games have been using this method; at least until very 
recently.
