I design flight simulators for my day job (I work for Link Simulation)
and I can tell you that cars are MUCH harder to simulate than planes
(at least from a physics perspective).   The controls and instruments
are a lot more complex in a plane - but the handling of a car is
much more difficult to do well - and it's also much more important to
getting a realistic 'feel' to the simulation.
