ISTR that the latest stepfast included auto-disable/auto-enable.
(Hasn't been a stepfast for a long while though, and it's not
rolled into the trunk, while the trunk has kept moving, so I wonder
whether stepfast will live?)

There was a post a month of two back from someone (was it the
OpCode guy?) saying that they had mostly finished a new, much
faster type of space for ODE.  Wonder what happened to that.
I'll try to locate the mail.
