The author(s) have chosen a license model that they are comfortable with
and which (IMO) allows a good range of free and proprietary uses of the
code.

Note also that any fork which did not desire to rejoin the trunk would
need to explicitly remove the GPL from its distribution terms. If one is
concerned about one's contributions not being freely available, then one
should not contribute to such projects.
