[ODE] collision shortcuts with symmetry?

I got a number of graphical shapes with vertical plane symmetry. I have to 
do collision testing for those, so I approximate their shapes with a number 
of ODE collision primitives. I was wondering if it's possible to take 
advantage of object symmetry and reduce the number of collision primitives 
necessary to describe a shape. Anyone know?
